Changed by a Strawberry Field
By Anthony Zolezzi | 0 Comments | Posted 04/25/2014Many years ago I was in a strawberry field in Watsonville California and reached down to grab a strawberry. Immediately the farm manager told me not to touch the berry. “Why not?” I asked perplexed. He explained that the field had sprayed four days before and although they had pulled the signs he still felt like it was too soon for anyone to eat. My next question was, “Do you take strawberries home for your family?” He replied, “Not ones that have been sprayed.” At that point I knew nothing about Organic food but I did know from that point on that I wanted fruit that wasn’t sprayed.
For me I don’t really try and understand all the differences that Organic mean. I just know one thing, that it means they have not been sprayed with pesticides that is all that matters to me.
Oh and this also started my quest to understand the way food is grown and manufactured and I have been doing that for the last 25 years since that experience.
