What Organic Means to Me as a Dietitian

Three things come to mind when I think of the word organic:

Intimacy. Choosing organic is an extremely personal approach to eating. How can we establish a close relationship with our food if it is grown in an unnatural way? Eating the organic way helps us establish intimacy with the food that fuels our bodies and helps us bond with the land that feeds our livelihood.

Care. As the only beings on the planet that grow and cook our food, humans have a great responsibility: we must care for the Earth so that not only we can prosper, but so will the generations to come. However, in order to fully care for ourselves and the environment, an organic lifestyle must be affordable and accessible to everyone. Affordable organic options enable us to be socially responsible and encourage sustainable practices now and in the future.

Peace. Stress weakens our immune system and lowers our ability to fight disease. When we choose organic products, we are assured that we are choosing foods that are free of synthetic chemicals and additives.  Peace of mind comes from making good decisions when it comes to the food we eat and the way we feed our families.
